Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Nikko Toshogu is the most famous shrine among the “Shrines and Temples of Nikko,” a representative World Heritage site of Japan. It enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate. Most of the current shrine complex was rebuilt in 1636 by the third shogun, Iemitsu, during the “Great Reconstruction of the Kanei Era.”
The grounds feature 55 buildings, including 8 National Treasures and 34 Important Cultural Properties. The gorgeous, lavish beauty of the architecture is breathtaking. Master craftsmen from all over Japan applied lacquer and vibrant colors to the buildings, decorating the pillars and structures with numerous intricate sculptures.
