Minoru Tanabe, M.D., Ph.D.

Congress Chairman,
The 35th Meeting of Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery
Professor of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Tokyo Medical and Dental University

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the 35th Meeting of Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS) will take place from June 30 (Friday) to July 1 (Saturday), 2023, at the Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo in Shinjuku. I am deeply honored and privileged to host this historical and traditional annual meeting of Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery.

The central theme of this annual meeting is “The Spirit of HBP Surgeons.” This theme was selected based on the belief that this field, which has contributed to advancing many highly complex surgeries, is underpinned by the dedicated spirit of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgeons who are willing to take on any challenge, regardless of the effort.

The JSHBPS, originally founded in 1989 as the Japan Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery Forum, has evolved throughout the years with a vision toward the future and has now become a society that attracts interest from Japan and worldwide. Because of various JSHBPS initiatives, including the Board Certification System for Expert Surgeons, Japan’s outcomes of advanced hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery have consistently remained at a world-leading level. Against the backdrop of such achievements as an academic society, we have included various topics at this meeting, including minimally invasive surgery, which has undergone remarkable development recently, and multidisciplinary treatment strategies for advanced hepato-biliary-pancreatic cancers, which continue to present challenges. The annual meeting has achieved a complete shift to English as the standard language for presentation and has increasingly attracted the many participants from overseas at recent years. We believe that the discussions at this meeting will drive further progress in this field, provide the latest and best medical care for patients across the world.

We sincerely hope that by 2023, the COVID-19 pandemic will be under control and that many participants from Japan and overseas will gather in Tokyo to engage in discussions and deepen friendships. We sincerely look forward to your participation.
