    Gisela started her career in the service industry in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in the hotel business to be precise. She\u2019s worked in several departments to get an all-round hotel experience and the desire to be of service to people was created there and is still a part of her today.

    In the 90\u2019s she lived and worked in Johannesburg, South-Africa for a couple of years, gaining experience in different types of industries.

    Back in The Netherlands she started working in the business service industry, for an alarm monitoring station, as management assistant and sales support. During the years there, there was an interval where she moved to Germany for a year.

    After an interview with Prof Jack Jakimowicz (EAES past president) and Prof Abe Fingerhut (then president of EAES), Gisela was hired in January 2010, to be the connection between the EAES Executive Board and the EAES Office.

    To date, she has been involved in 15 EAES congresses, each year in a different European city, in which her main task is faculty management. She is responsible for all the non-scientific tasks in the setting up of the scientific programme of the annual congresses. She ensures that all faculty gets invited and knows what to do and when, hotel bookings, reimbursement of travel expenses, etc. Due to her many years of experience she knows a lot of faculty and can unburden the chair of the programme committee and help getting the right person for the right job.

    On-site she provides support wherever she can and she delights in bringing people together and thus indirectly helping to disseminate surgical knowledge. She prides herself in that EAES is more than just a surgical society, EAES is a family, a safe environment where ideas and issues can be exchanged, where ideas and lifelong friendships are born.

    Although EAES is originally a European society, it very much cherishes its bonds with non-European societies. Examples of this are the honorary membership awards (current Japanese honorary members are Yuko Kitagawa, Masahiko Watanabe and Eiji Kanehira) and the joint sessions with other societies in the congress scientific programme.

    Besides the congresses, Gisela has been involved in the same number of Wintermeetings (since 2023 Symposium on Innovation in Surgery).

    Gisela is happy to also provide support to the EAES CEO, EAES Executive Board and the EAES Technology committee (the committee has (had) two Japanese members: Kiyokazu Nakajima and Noriyuki Inaki). This involves organising meetings throughout Europe, admin support and anything that may arise.
